How we tested

Same iced coffee, same temp (38°F), same mixing method (frother for 10 seconds), same scoop. Three reviewers blind-rated 18 powders on three axes: taste, texture, and “does it actually disappear or am I drinking sand?”

Our picks

Best overall: Ascent Native Whey

The cleanest ingredient list in the test pool, and it dissolves into cold liquid faster than anything else we tried. Vanilla Bean was the best flavor for coffee; we’d skip the chocolate variants.

Best plant-based: Ritual

Pea + rice protein blend with sunflower lecithin. Surprisingly close to dairy in texture and does not have the “earthy” finish that kills most plant powders.

Budget pick: Garden of Life Sport

Slight grit if you don’t blend it, but the macros are honest and it’s $9 cheaper than the Ascent. Good “everyday” pick.

FAQ

Why do most protein powders clump in iced coffee?
Whey isolate is hydrophobic at cold temps; it needs slight agitation or a wetting agent to dissolve. Most pre-blended powders use sunflower lecithin to help — those are the ones that work.
Is whey or plant better?
Whey wins on amino-acid completeness gram-for-gram. Plant catches up if you blend pea + rice + pumpkin. We don't have a strong opinion either way as long as the macros land.
