How we tested
Same iced coffee, same temp (38°F), same mixing method (frother for 10 seconds), same scoop. Three reviewers blind-rated 18 powders on three axes: taste, texture, and “does it actually disappear or am I drinking sand?”
Our picks
Best overall: Ascent Native Whey
The cleanest ingredient list in the test pool, and it dissolves into cold liquid faster than anything else we tried. Vanilla Bean was the best flavor for coffee; we’d skip the chocolate variants.
Best plant-based: Ritual
Pea + rice protein blend with sunflower lecithin. Surprisingly close to dairy in texture and does not have the “earthy” finish that kills most plant powders.
Budget pick: Garden of Life Sport
Slight grit if you don’t blend it, but the macros are honest and it’s $9 cheaper than the Ascent. Good “everyday” pick.
What to skip
- Mass-gainer “protein” tubs with sub-20g protein per scoop. You’re paying for sugar.
- Anything with “proprietary blend” instead of disclosed amino acid breakdown.
- Single-flavor tubs that only sell at one retailer with no third-party reviews. Just don’t.
